What Do Grass-Fed Cows Eat In Winter?

Idaho Beef

Here in the northern areas we usually feed hay or hay silage. Hay is essentially the peak season pasture that is preserved and stored by machines cutting, curing, and baling the forage. In more temperate regions where climate will allow, cows may be pastured on annual seeded crops like wheat, rye, oats, turnips, or kale. An interesting side note is that in the hot southern areas, sometimes cows will be supplemented with hay during the summer when it is too hot and/or dry to grow high quality grass.
